Beared-itorial – Leeds Winter Ball Report

So another Guild Ball tournament down and well what a shock!! I came third, I actually podium’d never ever done that before ever.

So you can imagine I am super happy with that, I also won best painted goal as well!!

But anyway the event was well run by Simon aka Spuddy from the Tabled podcast especially as it was his first time. The playing area was very nice and I can understand why the Leeds Night Owls are popular with that area to use.

The free tea/coffee/drinks plus mountains of cake and biscuits made by mummy spud where amazing and Simon has now set the bar for the next one he runs (no pressure fella).

It was a standard format event, 8-man teams (so 2 subs) and played over 4 games and 45 min death clock. In the end we had 10 players take part with a nice spread of teams on offer (but no Masons or Engineers).

Game 1 vs Alchemists

Result: 12-0 with 1-0 goals scored.

Team Picked: Ox, Princess, Shank, Boar, Boiler and Brisket

Not sure why I decided to run the flat 6 just went on a whim as round 1s are always a lottery unless you know your opponent. In my case it was Neil from Tabled podcast, who was still trying to get his head round Alchemists.

This proved to be a very nasty game as I managed to get on the front foot and once that happens with Butchers it is hard to stop. This was made nastier by the fact that Ox’s legendary play got maximum effect out of itself. 3 players taken out in one turn was nasty, Katalyst even with all his new buffs is still going to take a kicking from Butchers. In other news Brisket scored a goal which was pretty cool.

Stand-out moment – Ox eating Katalyst and nearly doing Flask in one turn.

MoM – Have to say Ox, but Brisket actually scoring was a close second.

Game 2 vs Butchers

Result: 12-6 with 1-0 goals scored.

Team Picked: Ox, Princess, Shank, Boar, Gutter and Rage

Face off with fellow Butcher and Bradford club bearded man JC. The last time we played we both tried silly lists and my silly list ate his (first turn puppy death on his part).

This time it was a very interesting game in a very tit-for-tat sort of way. Thankfully I managed to get my nose in front again and stay in front. He sacrificed his Gutter to get me with a counter punch which didn’t quite come off for him. Boiler did managed to get a goal scored to win while engaged. This was a very close game and much closer than the result showed..

Stand-out moment – Princess proving she will not go down easily. Even with a spot prize up for grabs.

MoM – Boiler for the winning goal.

Game 3 vs Morticians

Result: 4-12 with 0-0 goals scored.

Team Picked: Ox, Princess, Shank, Boar, Gutter and Rage

This was going to be interesting going against Steve Newton of WCWW podcast fame and winner of many events (including this one by the way). I was outplayed and was smashed well. Perhaps played the momentum game wrong, trying to play light to not be hurt from the Obulus legendary play. It didn’t work but hopefully lesson learnt from that. Not much to say really but good to play a very good player.

Stand-out moment – Shank just trying his best to be annoying to Obulus and failing badly.

MoM – Shank

Game 4 vs Union

Result: 12-8 with 1-0 goals scored.

Team Picked: Ox, Princess, Boar, Brisket, Boiler and Gutter

Final game was against mini Newton, which would be another hard game as he has won events as well.

It was a real brutal game, very to-and-fro in which we absolutely battered each other. I managed to get a goal with Brisket again. But the turning point and what won me the game. Was he took out Princess while I still had plenty of stuff to activate. Including a Boar who had just come back onto the field and Gutter with a chunk of influence on. Turns out Loved Creature trait is incredibly nasty if it kicks in early in the turn.

Stand-out moment – Boar enraged by puppy dying and smashing Gutter hard.

MoM – Princess – Without her being taken out couldn’t call the game.

Result

This meant I went 3-1 with a +14 differential which considering my goal was 2-2 result and a positive diff, not bad at all. Some of you keeping up will know that was the same stats I got at the Bradford event as well, I can be consistent who knew…

Lessons from the day

So what have I learnt from this tournament then as far as Guild Ball goes.

Young – The community is still very young and has a long way to go before it matures into the community that Malifaux has. Which makes sense considering this is only the first year of Guild Ball, it will be very strong I am sure. Which means I will savour the 3rd place as I aint getting close to a podium again..

Local Club – The rest of the Bradford lot also did OK. Which suggests that we have the start of a strong little meta which can only help everyone improve. Well except for me who is retiring as never going to do that well again 🙂

Local Meta – With both Bradford and Leeds having decent scenes, looks like we will be seeing a few GB tournaments that I can get too with even public transport which will be nice.

Captains – The season 2 captains are going to shake up the game so much it is going to throw some crazy results in tournaments. It is certainly going to be interesting as people are trying to constantly adapt to this.

Games This Week

Apart form the Tournament I managed to get in a game versus Alex for some Vassal Ball with me trying to get to grips with Brewers didn’t end well against his Fishies losing 12-2. Much to learn with the drunks didn’t help I took daft list with 3 big bases in it..

Then got a second game against Oli and his masons and the reactivating mallet first turn missile trick…I know its coming and wanted to see what would happen with Brewers. He took out Tapper but needed all his INF to do it, so at least I know that. Game ended 10-12 to him and to be fair it was really close and I made one huge mistake. I had Friday on one wound a few INF that could have taken out a very weak snakeskin (and then heal and run away) instead I went for the hail mary play hopping Tapper could deal with a full Mallet and a 2 wd chisel. Unsurprisingly he came up short. Must remember to think more and weigh up chances of doing big damage.

Hobby This Week

So after a self-imposed painting ban after some burn out. I am back on it slowly at least as I tackle the brewers team I have. Lets see if I can get them done before Christmas..
