Kingdom of Britannia Navy boxset – Review

Welcome to another miniature review for Dystopian Wars from the good people at Spartan Games.

Today I shall be looking at one of the naval starter fleets in this case for the Kingdom of Britannia.

As usual I will distract you with miniature crack so you don’t have to read anything ;)

What’s in the box

As with all Naval starter sets we get the following 1x Battleship, 3x Cruisers, 9x Frigates, 2x Bombers and 10x tiny flyer tokens. Plus the usual token sheets that are very much-needed in the game.

Nice

Standard tokens.

Review

Right best get reviewing then.

As my views of the card tokens has not changed I am going to just use the same bit from the Prussian review.

The card tokens are of a high quality and are very much-needed in the game. I could be picky and mention perforated tokens (like many board games) would have been much nicer instead of me using scissors/knife and messing it up ;) especially for the round templates and the turning templates.

Now nearly all of the miniatures are in resin which is pretty good stuff, on par with what I have seen with other resin miniatures if not better.

I say this because the level of detail on these are stunning. The small detailing is well executed and another company would be proud of what SG have achieved. As you may have seen other pieces from the range as I have reviewed them, you can probably tell you wont be disappointed.

The extra non-resin pieces such as the bombers and the turrets are all done in metal. Totally understandable to have the turrets as metal as their size would be so brittle. It’s a shame the bombers could not be done in resin as well as they do suffer from not having the same detailing as the resin ships, although they are still pretty good.

Tiny Flyer Tokens

First up the tiny tokens;

Only a small clean up needed on the odd bit of resin here and there.

The flyers themselves look pretty good and have a very turn of the century biplane feel to them which fits nicely into the most steampunk looking faction in DW.

Frigates

Now for those Frigates;

Pretty sure you can’t be that close….

All the detailing continues with crazy levels that I have come to expect from SG. I am also a fan of baby turrets as well ;)

With only small bit of cleaning needed around the propeller section. This seems to be the main area that you will see flash in most SG miniatures but with it being resin is easy to clean up with minimum fuss.

Cruisers

Now for the steampunky-ness to really kick with the cruisers;

The bigger ships begin to really show of the steampunk feel that spans the entire KoB range. I mean it is more engine than anything else :) and lets face it what says steampunk more than metal floatation tubes on the side of a massive metal ship??

I would want ear protectors on that bridge

As you can see there is only small amount of clean up needed on these ships (round the edges). What I like about DW ships is you keep finding little details I mean look at the ladder near the propeller section what would anyone want that level of detail unless they are insane :D

Battleship

Now for the big ‘un;

The battleship carries on where the cruisers left off but with the dial turned up a few notches.

I mean those chimneys could be taken straight from Battersea power station.

The usual issue of flash near the propellers but you should be use to that now, a quick nick with the knife and it is gone.

Bomber

Finally the bomber;

Little unsure about the bombers they look like a sea plane and a little bit steampunk (keeping up the theme) but not enough to tie in well with the ships. It looks to stocky to fly as well but then that is the beauty of not needing to follow aerodynamics but maybe I am being picky.

Final thoughts

Overall you will not be disappointed by this kit and at the price it is sold for is an amazing way to get into DW. Yes the bombers (like the prussian box) are the weakest miniature in my opinion but if you want some of the most steampunky ships you will ever find than KoB ships are for you.
